Corrupt Translation Someone under the watch of Reuben Gold Thwaites, editor of the Jesuit Relations and Allied Documents, inserted into the historical record in the 1890s, or before, this deceitful tranlation as seen in the Jesuit Relations, vol 58, p 93. "Their journal stated" is not in the primary source manuscript text, as one can see. This insertion is intended to mislead us into believing there was a journal. There was no journal. Neither an "abridged" narrative of Marquette published in 1681, nor a "real" and expanded narrative "discovered" in 1844 upon which the 1681 was said to have been based. can not stand up to critical analysis.
The Wisconsin History website has the document. The typeset French (found from the left pull down menu) is accurately rendered, but the English translation shares with The Jesuit Relations the fraudulant, "Their Journal Stated". (Neither Reuben Gold Thwaites nor the Wisconsin site make it clear that the document represents the Aug.1, 1674 Jesuit Father Claude Dablon interview with Jolliet.)
