The angle of the Mississippi copied from d'Lisle, 1703.Whoever forged the Marquette Map seems to have appropriated the severe angular shape of the Mississippi River, the current western boundry of the State of Illinois, from the prototype as seen on the Guillaume d'Lisle map of 1703. The westernmost point on d'Lisle and Marquette are both incorrectly set at the 39th instead of the correct 40th degree of latitude. This map of 1703 was the most popular and respected map of its time, being the first, among other features, to depict the Mississippi discharge as a Delta.
