A Slight Diversion on the Name 'Chicago'

One of the great commentaries on the French colonial North American interior in the 1680s was that of Henri Joutel. He was for several years the man LaSalle entrusted with highest authority. Joutel was later, in 1713, to publish his memoires in Paris. The following year they were translated into English. As can be seen, the word that should have been spelled <chicagou> was mistakenly spelled <chicagon> and it spawned one of the major threads of the etymology of the word "Chicago". The nasal ending of the erroneous translation in the Algonquian languages being a locative: "place of the," or "at the."
