The relatively rough state of Jesuit map creation is illustrated below by the Raffeix map (c. 1683?). Compare the contours of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers on this map with the "Marquette map, (1673-74)", discovered" in 1844. The Marquette Map is too accurate.
